Dog Feeding Guide: How to Keep Your Dog Healthy

A regular feeding routine is essential for keeping your dog happy and healthy. As puppies grow into adult dogs, they need a balanced diet that includes the right mix of protein, fats, vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates.

Adult dogs require 37 essential nutrients to maintain a healthy body condition. Whether you choose wet dog food, dry dog food, or a combination of both, the key is ensuring your dog receives complete nutrition. With so many options available, choosing the right food can be challenging. This dog feeding guide explains what to feed dogs, their nutritional needs, and how to support their wellbeing.

          What to Feed Dogs

Dogs need a diet that includes both animal and plant-based proteins. Most owners feed a complete, high-quality dog food, while some add ingredients like cooked meat, fish, vegetables or rice.

Fresh meats such as chicken, turkey and beef provide valuable protein and minerals, but should always be properly prepared and safe for dogs. Senior dogs often benefit from low-calorie, high-protein diets to help manage weight and maintain muscle.

Always provide fresh, clean drinking water, and support your dog’s dental health with chew toys and dog-safe toothpaste to help keep teeth and gums strong.

          Wet vs Dry Dog Food

Both wet and dry dog food provide balanced nutrition, but each has its own advantages.

Wet dog food contains more moisture, making it helpful for dogs that don’t drink enough water. Its strong smell can also encourage fussy eaters and is ideal for dogs with dental issues.

Dry dog food is convenient, easy to store and can be left out without spoiling quickly. It’s a practical everyday option that delivers essential nutrients in measured portions.

Many owners choose to mix wet and dry food to provide variety and balanced nutrition.

How Much Should I Feed My Dog?

Most dogs should be fed once or twice a day, depending on their size, breed and activity level. Dogs usually move onto adult food at around 12 months for small breeds and up to 24 months for giant breeds.

The amount you feed your dog should maintain a healthy, lean body weight. Treats can be given in moderation but should make up no more than 10% of daily calories. Avoid exercising your dog one hour before or after meals to prevent digestive issues.

          • Small breeds often need more frequent feeding due to faster metabolisms
          • Large breeds may require controlled-fat diets to support healthy weight

          What Not to Feed Dogs

Some foods are dangerous and should never be given to dogs.

          Avoid feeding your dog:

          • Chocolate — contains the toxic substance theobromine
          • Salty snacks — can cause dehydration, tremors and seizures
          • Uncooked dough — expands in the stomach and causes discomfort
          • Onions, grapes, garlic and raisins — highly toxic to dogs

If your dog eats something harmful or suddenly stops eating, contact your veterinarian immediately. When changing dog food, transition slowly over 7–10 days to avoid digestive upset.
