            What is a tension headache?

            What is a tension headache?

If you’ve ever experienced a headache, whether from staring at a screen all day or skipping your usual morning coffee, chances are you’ve had a tension headache. When this happens, the muscles in your head, neck, shoulders and eyes can feel strained. Different people may experience different levels of pain, from mild to severe. In some cases, a person can experience up to 15 tension headaches in the same month. It has often been compared to having a tight band strapped around your forehead – ouch!

            What causes a tension headache?

As mentioned, spending hours on your laptop doesn’t help, but is there more to it? The answer is yes. Tension headaches can also stem from:

            • Anxiety and stress
            • Tiredness
            • Caffeine
            • Bright sunlight
            • Dehydration
            • Not enough physical activity

As well as the above, it can also be caused by squinting too often, poor posture, loud noises, certain smells or skipping meals.

There’s little wonder tension headaches are so common…

How to relieve a tension headache

There are 3 main ways a person can deal with a tension headache: release muscle tension, exercise and painkillers. Here’s why:

            Get a massage

There’s arguably no better way to relax your muscles than a good old massage. It releases tension, calms your mind, and let’s face it, we all love to be pampered now and then. Time to Google your nearest spa?

            Exercise

That’s right – exercise actually helps alleviate a tension headache, believe it or not. It helps relieve muscle strain and lowers stress levels – two main causes of tension headaches. We recommend going for a light cardio session on an elliptical trainer, or a quick jog on your treadmill. Resistance workouts that target your back, neck and shoulders are also great cures. The bottom line is, anything that gets blood pumping, helps you breathe more and activates your muscles is bound to relieve a headache.

            Painkillers

Sometimes it’s just easier to take medication – we get it. Especially if you want a quick fix. Over-the-counter paracetamol, ibuprofen and aspirin are proven to help relieve a tension headache. If you’re taking these products, always make sure to check the packet for instructions.

For children under 16, we cannot recommend taking aspirin, while pregnant women should avoid ibuprofen in their third-trimester as it could harm the baby.
