Your guide to periods for teens

Whether you are waiting for your first period to arrive or are a parent who wants to know more about periods for teens, we’ve got your back! There are a lot of questions around ‘the time of the month’, so today, we’re here to answer a few of the most common to help you feel more confident when your period arrives or when your teenager inevitably asks about them!

            What are periods?

Simply put, a period happens a few years after puberty begins and involves bloody fluid coming out of your vagina for a few days each month. There is nothing to worry about when you get your first period; it’s completely normal and a sign of good health!

            Why do girls have periods?

Trust us, you’ll ask yourself this question more than once in your life! But the truth is quite straightforward. Each month (after puberty) the female body releases hormones into the body, that thicken the womb’s lining. As well as hormones, the body releases an egg which, if fertilised, could lead to pregnancy (but that’s a whole other convo!) If the egg is not fertilised, the lining breaks down and results in bleeding, aka a period!

When will I get my first period?

Most girls will get their first period around the age of 12; however, it can come anytime between 10 and 15 years old. If your friend gets theirs first? That’s fine. Or did your sisters come at an earlier age? That’s okay too! It’s important to know that every girl’s body is different.

            How long do periods last?

Periods usually last five days; however, length can range from 3 to 7 days. After a few periods, you will start to understand more about your body, how long your periods will last, and how they will make you feel.

What are the early signs of a first period?

Are you waiting for your first period? If so, you may be experiencing a few tell-tale signs that it’s not too far away!

First, you may notice a few changes to your body, such as your breasts growing or that you are getting taller. Most periods will begin 18 -36 months after your breasts start growing, but as for the exact date and time of your first period, that, unfortunately, will be a surprise!

How will my period make me feel?

There are several symptoms related to getting your period, such as food cravings, mood swings, bloating, cramping and tender breasts a few days before your period is due. While this sounds a tad stressful (for teens and parents alike!), remember every girl is different and may experience none or just a few of these.

Will getting my first period hurt?

No, in general, periods do not hurt. Some females may experience cramps in their lower abdomen and discomfort, but most women won’t know their period has arrived until they see it!

Which period products should I use?

Now, when your period arrives, you’ll want to stop it from soaking into your clothes. Some women’s flows will be light, while others will be heavier. Depending on your flow (how much blood comes out during your period) may depend on which sanitary product you choose.

At Savers, we have a wide range of affordable products to explore and try, including sanitary towels, tampons and panty liners (for days outside of your regular cycle, if you wish!)

            Sanitary Towels

A sanitary towel or pad sticks to the inside of your underwear and absorbs the blood flow as it leaves your body. Pads come in ALL different sizes and absorbency levels, so you can feel 100% protected whether your period is light or heavy. Some also come with wings to keep them in place, some are extra long for added protection and others come compactly wrapped so you can travel with them.

            Tampons

Tampons work the same way as a pad in that they absorb the blood; however, a tampon is inserted inside the vagina. Tampons are great for activities such as swimming or if your underwear won’t hold a sanitary towel. Some will come with applicators, while others do not. There’s no right or wrong type to use, as long as you learn how to use them safely.

What do I do after my first period?

Once your first period is over, you may expect your next to come precisely a month after the first. However, that may not be the case. Therefore, we recommend writing down the date your period started and how long it lasted. This way, you can build a picture of your future periods and leave nothing to surprise again!
