How to clean your dog’s bed

Did you know that it’s recommended to wash your dog’s bed at least once a week? This is to help keep both you and your four-legged friend healthy and hygienic. Whether they’ve brought in mud from a woodland walk or have had a little accident here and there, their bedding can quickly become a breeding ground for dirt and bacteria. So, if you’re after a step-by-step guide on how to clean your dog’s bed (one that involves more than a spritz of air freshener) then we’ve got you covered!

How to clean your dog’s bed

          Step 1: Remove dog hair

Whether your pooch is a serial shedder or not, dog hair can be a nightmare for clogging up your washing machine and drains. To help avoid this, make sure your pre-wash routine starts with a spot of de-fuzzing. You can begin by hoovering your dog’s bed to pick up the majority of the hair. For any left over, you can go in with a lint roller for a final sweep.

          Step 2: Apply stain remover

If there are stubborn stains from accidents (i.e., wee, poo or vomit) you can spot-treat these areas (with pet-friendly) stain remover. If you prefer to use a more natural formulation, applying white vinegar to these stains for 5-10 minutes is said to have great results!

          Step 3: Wash

Dog beds with a removable outer cover

If your dog’s bed has a removable cover, you’re in luck! You can remove the outer cover and pop it straight in the wash with a non-toxic (and preferably unscented) detergent at around 60 degrees. Avoid using fabric softeners as the ingredients within this product can be potentially harmful to dogs.

Top tip: To help catch any lingering pet hair or dirt in your washing machine, pour a cup of white vinegar into the drum and run a cycle on empty.

Dog beds without a removable cover

If your dog’s bed doesn’t have a removable cover, a little elbow grease will be required on your end! You will need to handwash the bed in the bath or a large basin. To do so, submerge the bed in warm water and pet-friendly detergent for around 15 minutes. To help ensure that the doggy odour is taken care of, you can even apply baking soda to the bed and scrub it with a toothbrush.  If the water is brown and murky, you’ll want to rinse, and then repeat this step.

Once you’re satisfied that the bed is clean, refill the tub or basin with clean water and press the bed in a kneading motion to get rid of detergent. Again, this may need a couple of goes until it’s sud-free!

          Step 4: Dry

You can either dry your dog’s bed in the tumble dryer (for roughly 20 minutes) or hang the bedding in a well-ventilated area to air dry in the sun.

Tips to keep your dog’s bed clean between washes

          • Wash or wipe your dog’s paws after they’ve been outside
          • Hoover their bed regularly
          • Wipe their bed with a 1:1 mix of water and apple cider vinegar on a weekly basis
          • Sprinkle baking soda on the bed and then hoover it up to remove odours
