How to have a good skin-care routine on a budget

With the possibility of a recession just around the corner, some of us may wonder how we can afford a good skin-care routine when we have to cut back on so many other things. Lucky for you, we’re here to offer a helping hand –  here are 5 skin-care tips to maintain a good skin-care routine during the recession.

            Take makeup off before bed

Forget to take your makeup off before bed? You’re not alone. But by adding a simple make-up removal routine to your evening regime, you’ll find that your skin looks healthier and more well-balanced. During sleep, our bodies and skin are hard at work – renewing old cells – so when our skin is permanently clogged up with make-up, our skin is unable to breathe or heal itself and will inevitably lead to blocked pores, spots, inflammation, premature ageing and fatigued-looking skin. So while removing makeup as part of your skin-care routine might seem like a chore in the short instance, your skin (and bank account) will thank you for it in the long-term.

            Drink more water

One of the most important (and free) skin-care routines you can do is to drink enough water throughout the day (at least 8 glasses to be exact). Healthy skin has a pH balance of 5.5 so if you’re constantly dehydrated your pH levels can become off-balanced, leading to unhealthy-looking skin. Not only that, drinking water also helps to flush out toxins, keeps pimples at bay but also creates better skin texture – so you’ll need less makeup to cover up those pores – we can see why celebrities say drinking water is their top skin-care secret.

            De-stress

You may be wondering how stress affects your skin-care, but it can have a negative effect on your skin health. When we’re feeling stressed, our bodies produce more cortisol (also known as the fight or flight chemical) and higher levels of cortisol increase the oil production in your skin glands, making our skin more oily and more prone to clogged pores and break-outs. Stress has also been shown to irritate skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. So if you’ve been feeling more stressed lately, try adding in a few mindfulness or deep breathing exercises as part of your skin-care routine – and watch the difference to your skin health.

            Add in a moisturising lotion

If you’re not already using a body moisturiser – then you’ve been missing out on a huge skin-care trick. Not only does a moisturiser hydrate and soothe your skin, but it also preserves the natural moisture balance of your skin and reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The British Journal of Dermatology argues that wrinkles are created at a far slower pace on moisturised skin than dry un-moisturised skin. So while you may need to invest in a moisturising lotion such as sebamed moisturising lotion (there’s perfect ones at an affordable price) – you’ll spend less on beauty products or botox in the long-term.
