A guide to puberty for boys

Deepening voice? Hair growing in strange places? At first, one or two sprouts, but now there are more. Are you increasing height and size? No, you’re not turning into bigfoot. You’re simply experiencing changes that come with becoming a full-grown adult.

In this guide, we answer some common questions surrounding male puberty. At the end, you will know how to handle puberty like a champ. Or, as a parent, you’ll understand what your boy(s) are going through and have answers ready for when they ask.

What is the meaning of puberty?

Puberty is the process where a boy’s body develops from child to adult. It’s nothing to worry about. The changes you notice are your body telling you that you’re becoming sexually mature. And that’s a good thing.

          When does puberty occur?

Boys develop a tad slower than girls. On average, male puberty starts between the ages of 11 and 12, with some exceptions. For some, puberty begins as early as nine years old (precocious puberty), while for others, it begins at 14 (delayed puberty).

If your peers start experiencing changes before you, that’s fine. It doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. It’s important to remember that every boy goes through the same puberty stages for males at different rates. Some boys develop faster than others. And some physical changes may happen faster (or slower) than others.

What are the main changes to the body during puberty?

It’s good to know what changes to expect during puberty. This will help you prepare better and leaves no room for surprises. Here are the major changes that occur during male puberty:

          Hair, Sweating, and Acne

One of the first signs you’ll notice in the onset of puberty is hair growth. Not on your head, of course, but in places they’d never grown before. Chin. Chest. Underarm. Pubic area. Causing you to need to shave often. At the same time, you’ll start to sweat – a lot. This is because your body releases hormones that cause your sweat glands to become more active. Unfortunately, they may also trigger oily secretions from your skin, often leading to acne breakout.

          Body Shape/Size

Be ready to get bigger-sized shirts and pants as puberty comes with growth spurts. That is, you will increase in height rapidly, outgrowing your current wardrobe. Your shoulders will broaden, and your muscles will become more defined, making you stronger.

          Voice Change

As your growth starts to slow down, your voice will change. Your vocal cords and voice box become heavier, deepening your voice in the process. Expect a bit of a crack in your voice at first before the ‘baritone’ kicks in.

          Penis and Testicle Growth

Male puberty prepares boys for sexual reproduction, which means the genitals aren’t left out of the fun. As a result, your penis and testicles will increase in size and length (penis). Some people may experience papules, small pimple-like bumps on the penis. Don’t worry; they are normal and harmless.

Alongside genital growth comes nightly secretions from your penis called ‘wet dreams’. This may be accompanied by sexual dreams in some cases.

          Mood Swings

One minute you’re cheerful. The next, you feel like a big cry baby. After that, you’re mad at the world. Mood swings come with the territory and are common during male puberty. You’ll experience a range of intense emotions as your mind adjusts to hormonal signals from your brain. Try to take it easy with yourself and those around you. Understand that it’s the hormones acting up, not you.

          Hygiene tips for puberty

Good personal hygiene practices should be a part of everyday life, before and after puberty. Brushing, flossing, toe and fingernail care, everything. However, you’d need to dial your hygiene routines up to eleven with puberty. That may sound like a chore if you don’t know how to do it. Here are some helpful hygiene tips to get you started.

          Shower Regularly

And by “regularly”, we mean every single day. You should shower (or bath) twice a day – morning and evening. Focus on areas where you sweat the most. Armpits. Groin. Neck. This helps to get rid of sweat-dirt-oil residue on your skin and unclog your pores, leaving you feeling fresh. Shower gel or body wash, you decide whatever works best for you. Face wash or cleansers will come in handy to keep your face oil (and thus, acne) free.

          Use Deodorants/Antiperspirant

Using deodorants or antiperspirants is a great way to ensure you smell fresh all day long. You may want to carry an extra can in your bag when you hit the gym.

          Shaving Correctly

How often you shave is determined by how much hair you have and how fast it grows. Typically, it would be best to shave your beard twice a month. Oh, and let’s not forget the hair down there. Grooming your pubic hair will discourage the growth of bugs that may cause infections and bad odours.
