Skincare products to avoid during your pregnancy

Skincare during pregnancy probably looks a little different to what you’re used to. Even though there are many pregnancy-safe products you can use, there are also some to avoid. That’s because when you apply products to your skin, they absorb into both yours and your baby’s body. Being extra careful about what you’re using will help protect your little one while it grows and develops inside you.  

Skincare ingredients to avoid include: 

• Retinoids, which are found in anti-acne treatments and anti-aging skincare products 
  
• High doses of salicylic acid, which is an exfoliating acid commonly found in facial toners, serums, and masks  
  
• Hydroquinone, an ingredient used to lighten skin 
  
• Phthalates, which are found in some shampoos, soaps and hair sprays 

When it comes to actual products, it’s best to avoid chemical sunscreens and spray tans. Don’t worry – fake tan creams, mousses and lotions are safe, so you can still maintain a gorgeous sun-kissed glow while you’re expecting. It’s just that experts haven’t figured out the effects of inhaling spray tans yet, so it’s not worth the risk.
